How Exactly Is ColdSend Different from Smartlead, Instantly, Hypertide, and Everyone Else

If you are shopping for a cold email tool, you are probably comparing Smartlead, Instantly, Hypertide, and maybe a dozen others. Here is the problem: most of these tools are not the same kind of product. Some are sequencers. Some are infrastructure providers. Some are both. And if you do not understand the difference, you will either buy the wrong thing or pay twice for what you need.

This post explains exactly how ColdSend fits into the landscape — and why having Azure manage your IPs while you focus on campaigns changes the economics of cold email entirely.

The Two-Tool Tax (And Why It Is Worse Than You Think)

Every cold email setup needs two things:

  1. IP Infrastructure — Inboxes with clean IPs, DNS records configured, and reputation managed.
  2. Sequencer — Campaign creation, list upload, scheduling, reply handling, analytics.

The industry has trained you to buy these separately. You go to Hypertide or Google Workspace for inboxes. Then you go to Smartlead or Instantly for the sequencer. Two bills, two dashboards, two support teams, and a lot of manual integration work in between.

But here is what nobody tells you: the real cost is not the tools. It is the IP management.

If you buy dedicated IPs from AWS or SendGrid, that is $25/month per IP. At 20 inboxes, that is $500/month just for IP rental—before you send a single email. And if an IP gets blacklisted, you are the one who fixes it.

ColdSend does not make you manage IPs. We are a wrapper around Azure Communication Services. Microsoft manages the enterprise IP pool—monitoring reputation, auto-swapping blacklisted IPs, and keeping the infrastructure healthy. You get the sequencer + the managed IP pool in one flat rate.

Smartlead and Instantly: The Sequencer-Only Reality

Smartlead and Instantly are excellent sequencers. They send emails, rotate inboxes, handle replies, and provide analytics as well as anyone in the industry.

But they do not include mailboxes.

When you sign up for Smartlead, you get a sequencer and nothing to send from. You still need to source inboxes elsewhere:

  • SmartSenders (Smartlead's marketplace): $4.50/month for fresh mailboxes, $9/month for pre-warmed
  • Google Workspace: ~$6-12/month per inbox, plus setup time
  • Hypertide: $50/month per order (plus $2,000–$3,000 setup fee)

So Smartlead at $174/month is just the starting point. At 50 mailboxes via SmartSenders (pre-warmed), that is another $450/month. Your real stack cost: $624/month. And you are still importing mailboxes one by one and managing their IP reputation yourself.

Instantly is similar. Their base plans include "unlimited email accounts"—meaning unlimited connections. But the actual mailboxes cost extra via their partners or you bring your own. Their Light Speed plan ($358/month) includes dedicated IP blocks via SISR, but that is an entirely different price tier.

The bottom line: sequencers send emails beautifully. But they do not solve the inbox problem. That is still on you.

Hypertide: Same Azure, Different Management Model

Hypertide uses the same Microsoft Azure backbone as ColdSend. They spin up 100 Azure inboxes in 4–6 hours, configure DNS, and hand them off.

But there is a critical difference in who manages what.

Hypertide's model: They provision an Azure tenant for you manually. You get the inboxes. Then you manage that tenant, monitor IP reputation, and connect it to a separate sequencer (Smartlead, Instantly, Bison). If an IP gets blacklisted, you handle it.

ColdSend's model: We connect you to Azure Communication Services (ACS), which uses Microsoft's managed enterprise IP pool. Microsoft monitors the pool and auto-swaps blacklisted IPs. You do not manage the tenant. You do not monitor IP reputation. You just send emails.

Both use Azure. Hypertide gives you a manual tenant + requires a separate sequencer ($2,500+ setup + $50/mo + $174-379/mo for the sequencer). ColdSend gives you ACS's managed pool + built-in sequencer at $79-199/mo flat.

What ColdSend Actually Is

ColdSend is a wrapper around Azure Communication Services with a built-in sequencer.

The IP layer: We do not manage IPs. Microsoft does. Azure Communication Services provides enterprise-grade IP pools that are pre-warmed and continuously monitored. If an IP ever lands on a blocklist, Microsoft replaces it automatically. You never touch IP reputation management.

The inbox layer: We automate Azure ACS inbox creation. You connect your Azure account (we guide you, 5 minutes, ~$2/mo), and we handle domain setup, DNS records, and inbox provisioning. No manual configuration.

The sequencer: Upload leads, build campaigns, schedule sends, handle replies, track deliverability — all in the same dashboard.

One login. One bill. No separate mailbox vendors. No IP babysitting.

The Actual Setup (Under 30 Minutes)

Here is what happens when you sign up for ColdSend:

  1. Subscribe to a plan (Growth, Scale, or Agency)
  2. Create an Azure account (if you do not have one) — free tier available
  3. Attach your Azure keys to ColdSend — we show you exactly which keys and where to paste them
  4. Connect your domains — add them in the dashboard, we generate DNS records automatically
  5. Wait for DNS propagation — usually 10–15 minutes
  6. Create inboxes — up to 100 per domain, fully configured with SPF, DKIM, DMARC
  7. Upload leads and start sending

Total time from signup to first send: under 30 minutes.

No VAs. No separate tools. No warmup period. No guessing whether your DNS is correct.

FAQ: The 7 Questions Everyone Asks

1. Do I need to buy inboxes somewhere else?

No. ColdSend creates Azure ACS inboxes natively on all plans. You do not need Google Workspace, Outlook, Hypertide, or a VA.

2. Do I need to bring my own inboxes?

Only if you want to. All plans let you import existing Gmail, Outlook, or SMTP inboxes. All plans also create Azure ACS inboxes natively. You can mix both — some domains on Azure, some imported.

3. Is this just a cheaper Smartlead?

No. Smartlead is a sequencer. ColdSend is infrastructure + sequencer. Comparing the sticker prices without accounting for inbox costs is misleading. Smartlead + Hypertide costs significantly more than ColdSend at every volume tier.

4. So you are like Hypertide but with a sequencer?

We are similar in infrastructure quality but different in economics. Hypertide charges $2,000–$3,000 upfront, $50/mo per order, and requires a separate sequencer. ColdSend is $79–$199/mo flat (BYOA) with zero upfront and the sequencer included.

5. Do I need to warm up the inboxes?

Not for Azure ACS inboxes. Azure Communication Services uses enterprise IP pools that Microsoft keeps pre-warmed. You can start sending real campaigns immediately. If you import external inboxes (Gmail, Outlook), those may need traditional warmup—ColdSend includes a warmup tool on Scale and Agency plans for that purpose.

6. Do I need to bring Google Workspace inboxes?

Only if you already have them and want to use them. ColdSend does not require Google Workspace. Our Azure ACS inboxes perform equivalently or better for cold email deliverability.

7. What does the actual setup look like?

Subscribe → create Azure account → attach keys → connect domains → create inboxes → send. Under 30 minutes. We have a step-by-step guide if you want screenshots.

The Real Cost Comparison

Here is what the first year actually costs at different send volumes, including the hidden mailbox costs most people miss:

| Volume | Smartlead + SmartSenders | ColdSend | Year 1 Savings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10K emails/mo | ~$2,100 (Pro + 9 mailboxes) | $948 (Growth) | $1,152+ |
| 50K emails/mo | ~$6,624 (Smart + 42 mailboxes) | $948 (Growth) | $5,676+ |
| 100K emails/mo | ~$11,160 (Smart + 84 mailboxes) | $948 (Growth) | $10,212+ |
| 200K emails/mo | ~$22,584 (Prime + 167 mailboxes) | $2,388 (Agency) | $20,196+ |

Smartlead's $174/month Smart plan is just the sequencer. At 84 pre-warmed mailboxes ($9 each via SmartSenders), you are paying $756/month extra—more than the sequencer itself. ColdSend includes 400-800 inboxes in the flat rate. The savings compound as you scale.

Who Should Use What

Use Smartlead or Instantly if:

  • You already have a reliable mailbox source (Workspace, SmartSenders, etc.)
  • You need CRM, lead finder, or mobile app (features ColdSend does not have)
  • You are happy managing mailboxes and IPs yourself

Use Hypertide if:

  • You specifically need Entra/Outlook UI with native Outlook experience
  • You already have a sequencer you love and do not mind managing a separate Azure tenant
  • You do not mind the $2,000–$3,000 setup fee

Use ColdSend if:

  • You want the sequencer + managed IP pool + inboxes in one platform
  • You do not want to manage IP reputation or replace blacklisted IPs yourself
  • You want flat-rate pricing with no setup fee and no per-mailbox costs
  • You want to start sending this week, not after 2-3 weeks of warmup

ColdSend is not an infrastructure provider. We are a wrapper around Azure Communication Services that makes Microsoft's enterprise IP pool usable for cold email senders. Microsoft manages the IPs. You manage the campaigns. Start free on ColdSend and get your first campaign out this week.
